“Google Phone” Launched Today!
The long-awaited Google Android mobile platform makes its debut today with the release of the T-Mobile G1 ($179 w/2-year contract).
It seems to have all the features of the iPhone (touch screen, computer-like web browsing, etc) with the Google stamp of approval. Why is a search engine like Google creating an operating system for cellphones? What is the future of mobile devices? Will carriers really give away all that power they’ve worked so hard to accumulate?
We’ll break down what all this means at the “Mobile Content” panel at Cyberposium — with panelists from Nokia, MediaFlo, and ex-MobiVox leaders!

Twitter or Yammer?
I’ve been on Twitter for almost 6 months now and I’m hooked — there is no better way to enable a “group consciousness” where all your thoughts, news, and actions can be shared and built upon. The official service category is “microblogging” but it ends up being more like asynchronous group chat. With all that said, there is no better way to figure it out than to try twitter out yourself — we’re on at http://twitter.com/cyberposium — follow us!
Unfortunately, Twitter hasn’t solved the inevitable issue of monetization just yet, but a copycat service, Yammer, aimed at corporate customers is already monetizing. See this NY Times article for more information.
If there is a way to monetize Twitter through advertising, we’ll figure it out at our Online Advertising panel at Cyberposium — our star panelists include advertising leaders from Yahoo, AOL, and Windows Live!

Wall Streeters Invade the Tech Space?
Are you a tech enthusiast by night, i-banker by day? If so, are you considering abondoning Wall Street for Silicon Alley?
NYTimes posted a Bits article last week about unemployed Wall Streeters flocking to Silicon Alley start-ups… I’m curious to see if we’ll experience that phenomenon at Cyberposium this year.
My guess is that industry preference is stickier than the NYTimes author lets on, but I’ll be happy if proven wrong.
Emerging and Converging
Lindsay and I have been witnessing an incredible amount of innovation in the technology and media worlds this summer. As we plan Cyberposium 14, one of the challenges around setting the theme and panel topics is that we need these finalized as far in advance as possible, yet we also need these to be up-to-date for our cutting-edge conference.
We recently announced the theme for Cyberposium 14 — “Emerging and Converging”. We will explore emerging technologies including cloud computing, next generation search, and automotive technology with perspectives from industry leaders, innovative startups, and legendary investors. Over the course of the conference, we’ll understand the impact these up-and-coming technologies and trends will have on our business world as well as emerging markets. Another aspect of our theme deals with the convergence of technology and media —e.g. the gaming console as a social networking, advertising, movie-playing, and Internet medium. This year, Cyberposium will focus not only on what is to come but also on how it all comes together.
As we begin to finalize our conference content, we want to hear from you on (1) which topics you find most interesting and (2) sub-topics where’d you’d like us to focus.
- Virtual Worlds & Gaming
- VC Funding
- Digital Media (video, music, TV)
- Mobile Content
- Digital Living Room
- Online Advertising
- Cloud Computing
- Next Generation Search
- Privacy in the Digital World
- Innovation in Finance
- Innovation in your car
